Digital Garage - Google

Create a warm, welcoming pop-up environment where small business owners could come together to meet, learn, and explore how Google’s digital tools can support their growth.

The space needed to feel accessible and unintimidating—less like a formal corporate setting and more like a place where ideas could flow freely. At its core, the concept was about fostering community, encouraging curiosity, and empowering visitors to take practical steps toward developing and expanding their businesses.

From this foundation, the experience was shaped around a journey—from initial inspiration through to expert guidance. Visitors would arrive with a spark of an idea and move through a series of moments designed to support that progression: listening to presentations, engaging in informal conversations, and connecting with like-minded individuals. The layout was carefully considered to facilitate both structured learning and spontaneous interaction, ensuring that whether someone came to absorb knowledge or to network, the space would support their needs.

The design language took cues from a “friends’ garage” aesthetic—relaxed, creative, and slightly industrial—combined with a clean, contemporary edge.

The intention was to create an environment that feels authentic and relatable, rather than overly polished or corporate. An OSB (or OSK-style) material palette became central to this approach, bringing a raw, textural quality that reinforces the idea of a workshop or maker space. This was balanced with softer elements—warm lighting, comfortable seating, and open layouts—to ensure the space remained inviting and human-centered.

Subtle but impactful branding moments were woven throughout the environment using pops of Google’s signature colours. Rather than overwhelming the space, these accents were used strategically—in signage, graphics, and key focal points—to guide visitors and reinforce identity while maintaining the overall aesthetic. The result is a cohesive blend of playful and professional, where branding enhances the experience without dominating it.

Ultimately, the project delivers more than just a temporary installation; it creates a platform for connection and growth. By combining an approachable design style with purposeful spatial planning, the pop-up becomes a place where small business owners feel supported, inspired, and equipped to take their next steps—transforming ideas into action within a space that feels both energising and welcoming.
